Last week we talked about a God who SEES and before whom all things are laid bare.  Nothing is hidden from Him.

This week I would like to emphasize we serve a God who HEARS.  I think it is incredible that God, the Creator of the universe, spans the chasm of His glory to our frail humanity to come and listen to us.  Don’t you?

Finding a good listener can be rare. We have 3 children, and like most children, listening well was not something they were born with or easily developed on their own. Getting them to do something we asked at times proved to be something of a “chore” (no pun intended). It’s amazing how young tots can so easily develop selective hearing… but who am I fooling, many adults do too! 😀

God’s listening skills are not at all like ours. He is not obligated to hear us, especially when we are prone to complain more often than not.  So why does He?

It’s safe to say that God is the only One who will always love us unconditionally with unfailing love. There are no strings attached. Here we go talking about God loving us again?  Yes!  Without the love of the Father for us, we would not have the cross and redemption. Our spiritual wellbeing depends on it.  I am thankful for that love and that He HEARS me because He LOVES me.

While humans can tend to focus on instruments, vocal prowess, artistry, looks and the like; God instead stoops down from heaven to lean in and listen as we worship His name.  You see, more than our vocal inflections and skills, God puts His ear to our heart because He loves our praise and worship. God HEARS the heartbeat that is saturated with His love. He HEARS when we sing with devotion despite hard times and difficulties. He HEARS our song even when we have doubts and confusion. He HEARS!  I never want to deprive myself of the blessings the Father bestows on me as He listens to my worship. He thinks I’m pretty good and He thinks you’re great too!

Here’s an awesome promise from Scripture friends.  Psalm 86:7 “When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.”  He hears our cries for help (Psalm 22:24) because at times there are no other words to say than “Help me God.” Ever been there?  God does HEAR!   In fact in Isaiah 65:24 we read this amazing scripture: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.” We don’t even need to finish speaking, God knows and is already answering. He is truly amazing.
Psalm 56:8 “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” (NLT)  Did you know God has a bottle for our tears?  It blows my mind that He is so detailed, attentive and loving toward us. We are truly never alone. When we think we are being ignored, rejected and misunderstood, God is there and He HEARS! This is more than pretty words, He promised to HEAR and deliver us from our troubles.  I’m down with that, aren’t you too?

There have been times in my life when I have felt like the circumstances of life were choking me and discouragement was settling in. Ever felt like that?  Like there’s a constant lump in your throat or butterflies in your belly?  I have personally found that one of the best things I can do is to have quiet time with the Lord, to ask Him the hard questions and to sit still and listen.  God HEARS a heart that seeks Him in earnest. We try so hard at times to impress God with our posture when in fact He is not looking at our approach, He is looking for honesty and sincerity. Jeremiah 29:13 is a reminder that if “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (emphasis mine) Are you being brutally vulnerable with God?

I’ve had some “friends” disappoint me when my expectations were not met.  To some degree or another, we probably all have.  But God is not like our human friends. He will not HEAR us out to then drop us and leave us because the situation is too hard to handle.  He will not backbite and leave us embarrassed and ashamed.

I have never been disappointed on account of God failing me, although I’ve failed Him many times. We cannot and should not base our relationship with God on disappointing relationships we’ve had with man. “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19)

This is our God!  He promised to HEAR us and He will be true to His word because He is a God who HEARS!
Will you open your heart and share it with Him? He will HEAR you when you call!
