Intimate relationships are an essential part of our human experience. As humans, one of the greatest needs we have is the need to belong. Meaningful and intimate relationships can fulfill that need in part, but certainly not completely. Let’s face it, we usually do not disclose everything or are fully transparent, but God knows us fully. In fact the Bible even tells us that He knew us in our mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5).
“He knew us before we were conceived.
There is no reason to hide, no benefit in living in spiritual isolation or masking our flaws from a God
who completely knows us”
Just as humans desire relationship, so does God with us. Christianity is all about relationship, in fact God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross, so that our relationship with the Father could be restored. When Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent Holy Spirit to dwell in us and make God real to us, because God yearns to interact with us at a special level.
The heart of the Father
The heart of the God is to establish an intimate shared communication with us. 1 John 3:1 reminds us that God so lavished His love on us, that He gives us the privilege to be called sons of God. There is no hidden agenda or motive. He did not “lavish” (meaning to “bestow something in generous or extravagant quantities”) His love so He could get something in return from us. There isn’t anything God needs from us, but there is something He desires, that’s intimacy with us.
Tear down the fences
We can be masterful at building walls and fences and hiding behind facades. In order to become intimate with Holy Spirit, we need to remove hindrances that stand between us and God. (Hebrews 12:1) What is there between us and God that’s shutting the doors to intimacy? If we are honest, we know full well where our hearts truly are or where our treasure is. So, whatever it may be, let’s admit it, repent, tear it down and allow Holy Spirit to get close to us. Draw near to God and He will draw near to us.
Develop an awareness
Busy-ness is one of those fences that hinders our growing in intimate relationship with Holy Spirit. I am convinced that this is a ploy of the devil to keep us distant and prevent us from being aware of the presence of Holy Spirit in our lives and to interrupt communication. To develop an awareness of Holy Spirit, we have to be willing to sit down and grow in our ability to gain a constant awareness of His presence. Holy Spirit wants to have a conversation with us, He is interested in our lives and development and the more time we spend developing our awareness of His presence, the more we will desire to spend time with Him.
Tune in to hear His voice
We are bombarded by voices; social media clamors for our attention and these many voices cause distraction, dull the voice of Holy Spirit and keep us focused on what is temporary and not critical to our growth. It’s easier to sit down and hit likes on Instagram photos than it is to focus on eternal values. I struggle with that greatly, I equate relaxation after a long day of work with doing mindless activities, when Holy Spirit calls me to set my mind and attention on Him and to enter His rest, true rest He can give when we enter into intimacy with Him.
I love how Psalm 63:1-8, depicts David’s deep and intimate desire for God. “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, In a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.”
That is the kind of relationship with Holy Spirit I aspire to, real, not holding back, after all inti-ma-cy is into-me-You-see. Why would I ever try to hide from Him, there is nowhere to go but into His arms.
